The following preparations will significantly minimize discomfort. It is advised that you follow them exactly.

Before coming to the office (at home)

1 -Give your son 0.5 ml of baby acetaminophen ( Tylenol or Tempra ) approximately one hour before procedure.
2 -Feed the baby well and burp him. Finish feeding him at least 45-60 minutes prior to the circumcision

3 - Bring with you the Tylenol as well as an extra diaper and the baby pacifier if he is using it. Also bring a bottle of milk if a he is bottle fed.
4- Dress the baby lightly for easy dressing after procedure ( e.g. light baby suit " BJ"  with a zipper)

In the Office Prior to Circumcision

-While the actual procedure takes only 1-2 minutes, you need to spare an hour in the office. Most of time will cover registration, consultation, preparing baby,  waiting for local anaesthesia to work as well as dressing and clothing baby and getting him in his seat.

-If baby is hungry when you arrive in the office,  you may feed him for about 10 minutes, and burp him, do not make him full.
-You will register your child and complete a consent form.

-Dr. Mati will review the procedure and the after care with you and will answer your questions and give you a handout of the instruction. If there is a family history of hemophilia or bleeding disorder or other health problems, you need to inform the doctor
-During the procedure,  it is your choice to stay with the baby or in the waiting room.

-Babies can sense parents anxiety and they become irritable. Stay calm and relieved that your baby can have a smooth procedure that could be done virtually bloodless and no pain. This is a 4000 years procedure and its complications are rare.

( Applying EMLA Cream),  THIS IS OPTIONAL,

Baby will have no sensation after applying local anaesthesia by the doctor ( by local injections) , these injections will take seconds to administer. However, you may choose to apply EMLA cream before that so baby may not feel the Anaesthesia injections  when administered).

Purchase ( anaesthetic "pain reducing" EMLA cream ) from a local pharmacy. Get the cream "as shown in the picture" , it is small size 5 gram tube
Notes:
-EMLA comes also in a patch and large size, Do not get these. The patch is not effective
- The large size  EMLA cream will be  a waste,  this cream is for one use only.

- In some medical conditions the EMLA cream should not be applied. If the baby is identified with any medical condition call our office for instructions, before purchasing or applying the cream.

How to apply EMLA cream:
-Apply 1 hour  prior to the circumcision.
-Use
half of the small size tube   ( not less)  to cover the tip of penis as well as on the shaft and around the base of penis ( about 1 cm around the base of the penis)
-Cover the area with any small clean nylon patch ( 5 x 5 inch ), ( as shown in the picture) , you may use a clean sandwich nylon bag. The nylon patch will hold the cream on the skin and prevent it from dissipating in the diaper.
-Do not wrap the nylon around the penis shaft because it will slide off
_Do not use  gauze or cloth because it will absorb the cream.
-
The Nylon patch that comes with the cream is small for the area and will slide off.
-The doctor will wipe out the cream just before starting the procedure. If for any reason the procedure is not done  within 2 hours of applying cream, wipe out the cream thoroughly from the genital area or thighs  with a wet warm cloth, or give the baby a bath to remove the cream. Do not leave cream on baby skin for more than 2 hours.
