The actual surgical part takes 1-2 minutes. Total time (for preparing the baby, local anesthesia, apply dressing and clothing baby) is about 20 minutes.
The procedure is virtually painless and bloodless and babies can take it well with proper pain controlling procedures in place ( see preparations before circumcision)
Minor discomfort may be expressed because they are strapped or when local disinfectants are applied. Most babies will be quiet or even sleeping during the procedure.
Dr. Mati is using the Mogen clamp that allows an easy and quick procedure and protect the glans , while the redundant foreskin is removed.
A local anesthetic is applied at the base of the penis using a very fine needle to further minimize discomfort. After 10 minutes the circumcision is done. During the circumcision, the baby may receives sugar pacifiers to suck on if needed, this can help calm the baby and reduce discomfort perceptions.
Skin adhesions are released and the Clamp is applied
The Redundant Prepuce ( foreskin) is removed
Clamp is removed and skin retracted to its normal place
On rare occasions, for babies who are older than 3 month and choppy with excess pubic fat and short penis, the penis may be expected to retract in the pubic fat after procedure and does not support keeping skin open in the first few days. This create a risk of skin closure on top of glans. Dr. Mati may suggest using " Plastibell" method if he predict high risk of skin closure. This procedure is to apply a plastic ring to keep skin open and heal properly. This ring will stay in place and falls spontaneously within 2 weeks
