Reasons some parents want to do circumcision on their baby:
( other than religion & culture)
Hygienic as it prevents trapping of bacteria or dead cells and reduces risk of common infections of foreskin
It prevent tight foreskin that prevent cleaning and interferes with sexual performance
Prevents inflammation of the penile head associated with some medical problems
Up to 10% of males will later require circumcision for medical reasons. When done in later life, circumcision is more costly with higher risks and may require a general anaesthetic and requires rest for 1-2 weeks.
Circumcision has been shown to reduce the risk of acquiring some sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV & reduce the risk of penile cancer.
Some studies also show that circumcised men have less risk of sexual dysfunction later in life.
What is a good age to preform baby circumcision?
In our clinic we perform circumcision up to 4 months of age. However, the best time is in the first 4 weeks.
In general " earlier is better "
Babies older than 8 weeks old may become more aware of their surroundings and recognize strange faces that may make them uncomfortable. Their nerve endings develop quickly which may cause baby to feel the staff handling more. Also, they may accumulate fat in the pubic area which can make the procedure slightly more challenging to the doctor and may influence after care and outcome.
Pain Control:
Studies had demonstrated that a newborn baby may feel pain up to the same level of an adult.
It is strongly recommended that proper pain control, including local anaesthetist, are used in the practice circumcision.
We use multiple modalities to minimizing pain and make the baby comfortable during the procedure and after ( follow steps at page before circumcision )
Babies reaction may differ by their age & personality, feeling hungry, cold disinfectants that are applied, or by being restrained or if their sleep is interrupted. In Most cases they take it very well with proper pain control. Most babies would be sleeping or quiet during the procedure.
Complications:
Just like any surgical procedure, complications may occur, but the incidence of complications is very low or nil when performed by an experienced doctor.
With medical advancements, current hygienic and sterilization practices, and experienced doctor it becomes highly unlikely that a complication of a major concern would develop. Also the multiple pain control practices make babies in much less discomfort than the past
To list possible complications : a minimal bleeding that stop spontaneously, and rarely more bleeding that is easily controlled by pressure or, very rarely, heavier bleed requiring stitches. Other uncommon complications are infections or the need to repeat surgery.
Most complications are easy to control by simple procedures as : packing or local antibiotics.
